四聖諦中的“滅諦“要滅的是什麼?要滅的就是五蘊,就是身心。《雜阿260經》中舍利弗問阿難:「所謂滅者,云何為滅耶?誰有此滅?」翻成白話就是:整天說滅,到底是要滅什麼?」(it is said, ‘cessation, cessation.’ Through the cessation of what things is cessation spoken of?) 

此經在南傳亦有,不過是阿難向佛陀提問。猜想是舍利弗知道阿難有問了這個問題後,跑去找阿難問個究竟。佛陀是這麼回答的: “Form(色), Ānanda, is impermanent, conditioned, dependently arisen, subject to destruction, to vanishing, to fading away, to cessation. Through its cessation, cessation is spoken of. “Feeling(受) is impermanent … Perception(想) is impermanent … Volitional formations(行) are impermanent … … Consciousness(識) is impermanent, conditioned, dependently arisen, subject to destruction, to vanishing, to fading away, to cessation. Through its cessation, cessation is spoken of. “It is through the cessation of these things, Ānanda, that cessation is spoken of.” (阿難!所說的滅,要滅的就是這些東西。) 

本母解釋,這一經是在說無餘依涅槃界,亦名滅界。滅界有三相:一者先所生起諸行滅,二者自性滅壞諸行滅,三者一切煩惱永離繫。第一個包括先世造作及今生思願所生諸行永滅。第二個是說若已得三果,轉生到天上,諸行會暫住一陣(非究竟住),隨後便會任性滅壞。第三即煩惱滅後,不更生起。這才是真正的「法界」!
